There has been great praise for the European Human Right Courts that grounded the Rwandan Refugee transfer flight as it was taking for. People have denied this move as being one that is morally bankrupt. After all, the refugees staked their lives and fortunes in hopes of better lives in Britain but find themselves being shipped to Rwanda.
Now, Rwanda and its people have been probably been offended by this outcry. Because let's be honest if I tell you the name and that it's a country in Africa. It would probably just conjure up the image of deserts, famines and dictators. You take that image and compare it with that of Great Britain, who would not choose the latter? Hence, critics see this as shortchanging the immigrants who gambled their lives and fortunes to get to Britain.
Liar, Liar Boris on Fire
Let's be honest, even before we break down the British-Rwanda Refugee exchange, the British government should have been transparent about its attention. After all, who likes illegal immigrants? Illegal immigrants are usually poverty-stricken and are undocumented. Hence, they will have little to no access to state welfare services. Thus, they will usually be exploited by those seeking to take advantage of them which would then lead to desperation where they might commit crimes eventually. All of which are problems for citizens and the government to deal with. However, instead of just saying this and working out a means for safe travel and legalisation, he said that he was doing the transfer as a courtesy and discouraging safe travel across the border. People can obviously see past his act of caring for the immigrants and the deception makes him untrustworthy.Hence, this leads to people not trusting him and putting his decisions in a bad light
Rwanda might actually be good? Look, we have all heard the accusations of the human rights violations levelled at Kagame(Rwandan Leader). The media have also spoken about his alleged attempts at silencing the opposition. However, has anyone spoken about the flip side? That Rwanda might actually have something to offer the refugees ? Poverty has been on the decline from 77% to 55%. Or that Life Expectancy increased from 26 to 67. In fact, it is a country that leads in Gender equality where 61% of the parliament is made of women. Before the pandemic, the unemployment rate was less than one percent. It has one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa and there is universal health care for 96% of its population. Rwanda does not sound so bad now does it? This just goes to show that we should not let old stories cloud our judgement. For a long time, the Rwandan name has been associated with genocide. That was a horrible thing that happened but the people worked hard to put it past them and work on improving their country, something that they are succeeding at. Sure, the Rwandan president might just want them to cement their western alliance but based on what I mentioned above, it cannot be denied that Rwanda might actually give the refugees a chance for the do-over.
The Honest Truth about Immigrants
Despite a lot of the demeaning rhetoric that is spewed about immigrants and how they take the local jobs and hurt the government finances by abusing the welfare, the truth is immigrants might actually be beneficial to a country. According to findings from the Cato Institute, the majority of the immigrants do the jobs that the locals do not want to do themselves. On top of that, it also suggests that it might boost the economy and improve the country's GDP. In fact, what is funny is that Britain's economy desperately needs workers. According to CNN, Britain needs workers across all sectors from education to agriculture even across skill levels. The unemployment rate is at the lowest in the past 4 decades and they still need more people. Honestly, everybody could use immigrants to boost their economy but Britain desperately needs them for sure if they want to continue playing up their political rhetoric, they should just continue dooming their own economy and help Rwanda boost theirs instead. Its honestly ludicrous people comment on how inefficient and corrupt the Rwandan government is and how by sending the refugees to rwanda they would essentially be dooming them. However, in actuality, the British politicians are willing to up the ante and spread divisive and false rhetoric just to garner popular support. Maybe keeping them in Britain might actually be what dooms them.
tl;dr An immigrant a day, keeps the downturn away
