Gun control has been heavily divisive in the US. From the excessively touted second amendment to those who believe that guns have got to go, the country has been deadlocked on this issue for a very long time. This gridlock results in only minor improvements being made like more "stringent background checks" or "raising the age limit to buy arms". However, these measures have to be pushed through a highly divided house and hence, it is regulated heavily and makes the measures highly ineffective.
The reason why Americans are heavily in support of keeping their guns is due to the natural decisive rhetoric of America and the way that the country was founded. America was founded after a great civil war that was won by the civilians by themselves using their own guns. The second amendment was meant to recognise civilians' authority when it comes to protecting themselves and their states from all threats including governmental operations. The United States of America are as the name suggests a collection of states. These states are bound together by the federalist government. However, the states still had certain control over their land. Given the history behind the foundation of the USA, there is deep-rooted support for guns by those who own one. This leads back to a lack of trust in their democracy or rather their country's capability in maintaining democracy.
They see guns as a means to form a state militia to defend against possible tyrannical overtures from the federal government. They see themselves as a deterrence against any possible dictatorships. Due to divisive rhetoric applied by politicians and media platforms, the gun bearers despise the direction that the country is heading in and believe it to be heading in despotic directions. On top of that, the radical ideology being pursued by the mainstream left and the rigorous cancelling of those who dare to disagree with them( Dave Chapelle,Jordan Peterson, Dave Rubin). This echoes the beginning of suppression and makes them feel warranted in their decision to hold guns. From how Tucker Carlson and Ben Shapiro were being accused by the mainstream media for being the reason for the white nationalist shooter to the prevalent nature of cancel culture where people's jobs could be terminated due to apparent public opinions.People in the US are aware of the cracks in their country.Given that the country was never stable to begin with, people would naturally be unwilling to part with their weapons.
The hard truth is that they do not believe in their democracy. The idea that they need guns for hunting is moronic, lets's establish that first, the cons obviously outweigh the pros. Gun control is not a solution. It is merely a mitigating factor. Civilians should not be allowed to carry arms.Only law enforcement personnel should be allowed to carry, and even then should be heavily regulated. There cannot be a returning of arms until the USA redeems the U in its name. They need a president that can unite.
Until then, they will need to make do with mitigating factors like enhanced background checks(where they make you go for a psychological assessment every 3 months). To the idea of arming schools, they protect their banks and offices better than they protected their children. I think that metal detectors and bag checks are a bit over the top but I do feel that armed security guards are needed. Not in any other country, but given the prevalence of guns in the US, there is a need to fight fire with fire. The idea that having armed guards at school might scare the children or ruin the environment of the school is absolutely silly given the fact it is scarier to conduct lockdown school drills(as it puts the literal fear of god in children), at the end of the day, the children will become acclimatised to it just as they do to the drills. These measures will only stave off further shooting and stall until a proper president arrives that will be able to get the people to trust him. Only then will they be able to begin to decontaminate their society of guns.
