The Ethics of Genome Sequencing

Updated: Jun 21, 2022

In our rapidly evolving world, there is an increasing need to question each decision we make. In this case, thanks to our advanced technology it is now possible to sequence the genetic identity of the child. From it, it will be able to identify any possible genetic kinks or diseases that could be life-threatening , giving doctors time to research and treat the condition.

However, as with everything in the information age, it could be hacked and stolen as well as exploited especially since it was done at a young age. What this means is that the company and database that is pro-curing and storing this information will have to be very well-defended and encrypted so as to make sure the information is safeguarded as any league could be a matter of a national security and on a more personal scale compromise an ordinary person's way of life.Naturally, this would be because the data would reveal the bacteria and virus that one is susceptible too. This would revolutionise terrorist attacks and certainly make biological attacks that are more deadly and targetted.

Then again, there is no way to stop the wheel of science as soon as the ground-breaking discoveries are made they will be purposed for everything. Hence, we might as well maximise the benefits.Although I do feel that genome sequencing should be optional, I think what is more important is the next step. After seqencing the genome, the natural follow-up would be to correct and alter the baby according to the preferences of parents. The chinese scientists who edited the CRISPR babies and attempted to disable and knockout the particular genes.

Is that truly something that should be stopped? For the moment, yes.The problem is that CRISPR technology is cheap and it would be priortised or rather monoplised by the rich .It would be akin to beauty treatments for unborn babies. There would not just be an elite class ,there would be an elite race. But let us be honest that is not going to happen. All we really can do is try to regulate it as much as we can. There should be conditions and heavy testing , that would enable the new human species to be more durable and better suited for the future. Regulation is the key to managing all discoveries.

tl;dr Cant stop them? Join them. Manage them.
