Climate change and global warming.4 words that are probably highlighted and bolded in Greta Thunberg's dictionary. Do not get me wrong it is truly astounding that a young girl was able to bring this crisis to world leader's attention.
Since the start of the 21st century, there has been much discussion about what to do from the Paris Climate Agreement to the Copenhagen Conference, there have been many goals that have been set as well as handshakes that have been photographed.Weaning of fossil fuels has also been attempted with the Nordstream 2 deal.Investments in Electric Car.Discoveries regarding Carbon Sequestration. However, despite the ground-breaking discovery of carbon capture and the presence of green initiative, they still have not been put into mass production. Why? It is not cost-efficent. You need to recognise that the people at the top only care about their bottom line.Hence, yes green iniatives are probably doomed to fail if proponents continue to use the same vein of argument regarding mortality and the need to save the penguin and what-not.In reality, as tech giant Elon Musk has pointed out. Fossil Fuels are about to become a thing of the past ,there may be time extensions as a few more oil wells are discovered, but oil is a finite resource and as its demand remains while its supply dwindles, it will become economically unfeasible. This is why Tesla is extremely confident of its products. They are products of the future.
In the end, regardless of whether or not climate change is caused by human actions, something will have to be done to mitigate the causes. Hence, I disagree with those who say climate change is not a crisis as by ignoring it now, we will be making it harder for the future generations. However, I do think green initiatives will be stalled due to political tensions. At the moment, the fastest way to industrialise is through the use of crude oil which is why the largest producers are India and China . No country would ever be willing to sacrifice their progress for the sake of the world especially when this is coming from rivals or countries that utilised it to get ahead of other countries. On top of that, given how Putin held Britain and France hostage with natural gas.
But I feel that the policy should not be guided by intense fervour for green actions it has to be weighed with a healthy amount of pragmatism.Hence, I do not belive that green initiatives are doomed to fail but I think that if we wish for them to succeed we must change our approach.Humanity will rally either out of greed or fear but good faith hardly.
tl;dr To be green, we need green.
